Blisses B – You Should
Blisses B contacted me through a post on the Mother Hips and sent me over a new album they had released last year. I have given it 4 or 5 spins in the past day so I will share what I like so far.
“Juxtaposed” takes a whole lot of folk and classic rock musicians, throws them in a bag and shakes liberally. Reminds me a little of the Subdudes right out of the gate with subtle beats that support the lyric instead of push it around. Then at about 2:06 the song takes a 20 second turn into Grateful Dawg territory. Smooth flowing mandolin runs with a minor feel are a real juxtaposition to the upbeat nature of the rest of the track. The opening track to the CD is well placed, as it draws you into the rest.
“Tick Tock” is a rockabilly piece that must be a lot of fun to see live. “Surfing Boogie Boards” picks up where the first track left off. “When in fact” also keeps the mandolin/banjo combo going. A simple hook propelled by a snare heavy beat (sounds like it’s played with a closed brush) that are perfect fit for each other. I could use a little more vocal in the mix myself, but I am still enjoying the song.
I’m still letting the rest sink in. I would love to catch them live, unfortunately they are a little far away for me to catch a show of theirs, but as you know I am a patient man. Check them out for yourself.
P.S. I love that they have 3 bass players in their myspace influences picture section. Danko RULES!
